Geographical Location
The Canary Islands are located in the Atlantic Ocean off the northwest coast of Africa, 1050 km from continental Europe. Consisting of seven large and several small islands, the archipelago is divided into two provinces: the eastern province, Las Palmas, which includes the islands of Gran Canaria, Fuerteventura and Lanzarote, and the western province, Santa Cruz de Tenerife, consisting of the islands of Tenerife, La Palma, El Hierro and La Gomera.
With a total area of 7447 square kilometres, the Islands have a population of approximately 1,995,833 (2006). The two most populated islands are Gran Canaria (population 807,049) and Tenerife (population 852,945).
