Infrastructure
Because of their geographical location, the Canary Islands are equipped with major shipping and airport infrastructure, as well as overland transport networks, to ensure quick, efficient transport of passengers and goods.
The Tenerife and Gran Canaria airports, served by the world’s major airlines, are among the five Spanish airports with heaviest air traffic. There are direct flights from most of the eight airports in the Islands to the principal European cities. This is one of the main reasons why the ten million tourists who visited us in 2006 were from continental Europe and chose to travel by plane.
There is a large network of commercial and fishing ports and marinas in the Islands. Puerto de La Luz in Las Palmas and Puerto de Santa Cruz in Tenerife are among the largest ports in Spain in terms passenger and goods traffic. These ports provide excellent facilities and quality services. They have become an essential stopover for goods whose destination or origin is in Europe, America, Africa or Asia and are also a strategic location for ship repairs and supplies in the Atlantic.
