Education and Training
There are two public universities in the Canary Islands: the University of La Laguna, in Tenerife, and the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, in Gran Canaria. In 2006 there were 45,000 students enrolled at the two universities, around a third of whom were studying towards technical degrees such as Engineering and Computer Sciences. The Islands also have considerable training resources in the form of publicly funded programmes adapted to cover specific company needs. There are also professional training centres which combine preparation for traditional trades with training in new technologies.
The Canary Islands provide a high level of academic training through a variety of primary and secondary schools, including a high number of bilingual schools. It should be noted that although the official language is Spanish, English and German are also widely used.
