Biotechnology is one of the most important sector in the field of R + D + i, because 80% of the total Spanish biodiversity is concentrated with over 14.000 terrestrial species, 600 endemic plants and 5.500 marine species recorded.
The archipelago is a pioneer region in the research and use of biotechnology. The Institute of Natural Products and Agrobiology (IPNA-CSIC) stands out for having been named by a commission of experts of the European Science Foundation as one of the best in the world in its domain.
Furthermore, there are significant initiatives in the field of bio-engineering,developed by different institutions.
