The natural conditions of the Islands make this a uniquely attractive place for the development of wind, solar, wave and tidal energy.

The Canary Islands are located in the forefront of technologies for clean water and energy:

  • World leaders in technology for the desalination of seawater.

  • The Canary Islands make it possible to obtain great profitability per square metre in investments carried out in sectors such as wind, photovoltaic or tidal energy, as well as significant development in applied research. It is worth mentioning as an example:

 

Wind power:

  • Constant winds
  • Average speeds of 6 to 8 m / s
  • Offer an equivalence of between 3.000 and 4.000 hours on the wind farms.

Solar Energy:

  • Over 2.500 hours of sun per year.

  • With a radiation of 5-6 KWh/m2 a day.

  • The photovoltaic installations operate with a production of over 1.700 hours.


Geothermal energy:

  • The Canary Islands could supply themselves by using the energy coming from the interior of the Earth (geo-thermal), given their volcanic origin.
 

  • The El Hierro 100% Sustainable Project: the island of El Hierro forms part of an ambitious project which will make it the first island to be supplied entirely by clean energies in the world.

  • The Oceanic Platform of the Canary Islands (PLOCAN) is one of the great infrastructures in the Spanish scientific panorama, whose objective is to serve as a base for testing and development of international projects in the sphere of marine technologies and those applied to the ocean.
